As we were approaching the launch of our first big green team campaign, Shut It Off!, Ana and I spoke softly one day about our biggest fear: what if BLR employees didn’t notice, or didn’t respond to our efforts. We were (are!) new at this, and trying to figure out ways to get our team objectives out there was a challenge. We wanted to achieve success companywide, and get the BLR Green Team off to a strong start. We needed to achieve a balance of being convincing and outspoken, and welcoming and positive.
We brainstormed with the team about how to incentivize, how to reward, how to identify behaviors that we believed required modification to achieve the GT goals. We came up with the following components for our first ever conservation campaign:
- Schedule an announcement at the company monthly meeting with upper management involvement.
- Hold a training session, and publicize it well with posters and email alerts.
- Issues fun citations to alert people that their monitor/laptop/computer/desk lights were left on during nonworking hours, and keep track of the departments making the biggest improvements.
- Create a list of energy-saving tips to send out company-wide to keep up campaign momentum.
So, the campaign launched in late February, with all components put in motion. Stay tuned to see how each worked out! We’re excited to see our employee response.
